Rich History Monterey's annual Standing Stone Day Celebration of Native American Heritage has been held the second weekend in October since 1979 near the remains of a 13-foot monolith that is believed to have been a boundary for Cherokee hunting grounds. Music, arts, crafts and food are enjoyed at the celebration. Each October an authentic Tennessee Central Railway Museum train rolls into town to commemorate the town's rich railroad past. A grant was received and land purchased in 2008 to build a replica of the depot across from the Imperial Hotel. The Depot is near the start of the trailhead for the Tennessee Central Heritage Rail Trail.

At a height of 100 feet and an elevation of 1,450 feet, Bee Rock is one of the more popular climbing spots in Middle Tennessee, and offers a spectacular overlook of the Calf killer River and Stamps Hollow. Legend has it that Indians gathered honey from hives underneath the cliff. Bee Rock is located on private property, but the owner allows the public to use the area for climbing, hiking and caving during limited hours.
STATE PARKS Monterey is a short drive from almost a dozen state parks and wilderness areas that offer boating, hiking, camping, lodging, and much more in outdoor recreation. Cumberland Mountain State Park - at 1,720 acres - is said to be the largest timbered plateau in the US. And nearby Standing Stone State Park is the site each year of the National Rolley Hole Championship - featured on ESPN. |
